I am pretty sure that the gas stations have a limit on how much gas you can pump out. Connecting the generators only allows taking the gas after an electricity shutdown, but the gas is still limited. #1. Alternative suggestion: See if you can fuel some empty gas cans or generators at the pump (assuming you have it turned on for the latter). Cars are great...but they trivialise the game quite a lot. So the player has to do a tiny bit of work to get one in working order (or just be lucky...)
