Or - the low oil condition itself could cause the chain to eat the guides (by increased friction), causing loss of tension, chain skipping, and then catastrophic internal damage to valves and pistons.

Mostly along the edges as the chain rolls off each end, but not enough to be concerned. The tensioner itself was the main issue. You can see the face of the tensioner wasn’t rotating on the face of the upper chain guide.
